BREAK DOWN OF CURRICULUM
Reading- In third grade we will work on reading to learn. Students will use context
clues, make inferences, make predictions and use other reading skills to better understand
a topic. We will use Houghton Mifflin Reading series, as well as several chapter
books accompanied with literature units. I will also be encouraging individual to
meet group and individual goals through our Accelerated Reading programs. AR books
will travel back and forth from school and home daily. Encourage your child to read
at least 15 minutes a night. Testing days for 3rd Grade will be on Tuesday and Thursday
at 10:35/
Math- In math we will go over place value, adding and subtracting with and without
regrouping, memorizing multiplication facts, multiply with two or three digits, division,
long division problems, fractions, decimals, percentages, geometry, measurement concepts
and multi-step story problems.
Writing/Language Arts- In third grade we write in a journal daily. During class we
will be going over the mechanics of writing a sentence and a paragraph. Everyday
we will practice editing sentences. We will learn how to organize our thoughts. Students
will decipher between telling a story and writing to inform. Third graders learn
parts of speech and other grammar skills to help improve their writing.
Religion- Religion will be taught everyday with Sr. Bernadette from 9:00 am to 9:30
am
Social Studies/ Science -Students will learn about map skills, complete project on
‘’ All About Me ’’, look at the presidential election, study Thanksgiving, learn
how to help the earth by creating recycled show and tell, and complete a project
about a U.S state. In Science we will explore some physical, earth, and life science
concepts.
As an attempt to help with critical organization skills in third grade, I have had
the kids put together a M.O.O.S.E (Management Of Organizational Skills Everyday)
Folder. Entries should be made daily so please look at all of the sections.
Homework & Word Lists- This folder will contain work to be done at home and turned
in. It will also contain work that your child has completed at school. Our weekly
spelling lest will also be found in this folder at the start of each wekk.
School Notes - This folder will contain any notes from school
Parent teacher Communication - This folder will have notes from me to you and vise
versus
Planner - A planner will be filled out on a daily basis. Please take a look at your
child’s planner and sign somewhere on the page letting me know you have checked it
for homework. Work not completed in class will be circled and should be done as homework.
