St. Agnes Academy School Board Minutes
February 2, 2009
Holy Rosary Parish Center – Conference Room
I. Call to order/Opening Prayer: The meeting was called to order at 5:33 P.M. Members present included Steve Rolls, Gina Ackerman, John Placek, Carey Tritle, Roger Applegarth, Kari Farritor, Stacey Imig, and Fr. Jim Heithoff. Search Committee members included LeAnna Johnson and Ellen Lierk. Father led in an opening prayer.
II. Parents’ Inc. Report: Bridget Wood read the minutes from Parents’ Inc. She said there were still a few problems with Bingo that needed to be addressed. These included helpers not showing up at 6:00, helpers not staying to help clean up after Bingo, and helpers bringing their children.
III. Search Committee: The committee decided to contact some retired principals in our area to interim as principal for a year if we are unable to find a suitable replacement for Mrs. Imig. We also decided to rerun all the advertising in mid February.
IV. Minutes: December and January minutes stand as delivered.
V. Treasurer’s Report:
A. Report: Holy Rosary Parish support column showed a two month profit because the support check for December was given in January due to the office being closed in December. The FICA and Federal Taxes along with Substitute Teacher pay columns seemed distorted so Mrs. Imig was going to check with Sandy as to why. The budget report reflected a $5,000 short fall for this school year.
B. Delinquent Tuition: Letters were sent out to families that were delinquent in tuition. Mrs. Imig reported that most families had either caught their payments up or made arrangements to do so. Only a couple of families had not responded.
C. Scrip: Sales are $44,000 ahead of this time last year. However, the money that scrip pays into the hot lunch program has not been going into that fund. This has been restarted.
VI. Principal’s Report:
A. Bingo: Of the two families who were fined for not showing up for Bingo, one family made arrangements to pay the fine. Mrs. Imig also thought we should be planning ahead for when Yvonne resigns.
B. Parent Letter: Mrs. Imig read a letter from a parent addressed to the school board. One concern was not seeing the minutes of the meetings, so they will now be posted on the school web site.
C. Past Events: Catholic Schools Week went well as did the boy’s Panhandle Basketball Conference that St. Agnes hosted.
D. Up Coming Events: The teachers will be attending the National Reading Conference in Denver. The students’ art work is on display at the Carnige Art’s Center. The Alliance Art’s Council will have its Artist in Residence program at St. Agnes the week of February 16th. On February 17th, there will be an Internet Safety Seminar at the school. February 19th is pizza making day.
VII. Pastor’s Report:
A. Cemetery: Tom Romick is serving as the caretaker of the cemetery.
B. Upcoming Events: The Foundation 50/50 raffle is February 26th. The Bishop will be here on March 25th to have an all school mass with the students.
VIII. Unfinished Business: There was no unfinished business.
IX. New Business: There was no new business.
X. Announcements: At the next meeting we will be reviewing our Cell Phone policy. Our next School Board and Search Committee Meeting will be March 2, 2009 at 5:30 P.M. in the Parish Library. Roger will read the minutes at the Parish Council Meeting on February 15, 2009.
XI. Adjournment: With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:10 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Carey Tritle, Secretary

My Nebraska
When I open my eyes, I see the surrounding sandhills, The brilliant blue sky,The rolling tumbleweeds.
I see the white-
I see a painter that's putting orange, reds, pinks, and purples around a blazing gold sun that's getting closer and closer to the horizon. Even after the sun sets, the colors remain a while longer.
When I listen to all that is around me, I hear the meadowlarks trilling a golden tune, the breeze making its way through the cottonwood trees, the miniature wildlife sprinting across the parched grass.
I hear cars hurrying by, people conversing, and tires screeching when I'm confined by the towering buildings of the city.
I hear only silence when I'm surrounded by the hay bales and hills of the farmyard.
When I inhale I smell the hot baking earth, the gently falling rain, the vivid wildflowers on the side of the road.
I taste the sunny, warm air in the west, and the summery, humid air in the east.
When I reach out my hand I feel the scorching sidewalk, the cotton from the trees floating through the sky, the frigid snowflakes landing noiselessly on the ground.
I feel the sharp cactus, the smooth sand from the hills, the rough bark on the trees.
When I finally become completely aware of all that is around me, I realize that I'm not in the middle of nowhere as everyone suspects.
Instead, I am in the middle of everywhere.
This is my Nebraska.

Kacey Horn, 14, daughter of Kevin and Cynthia Horn of Alliance, and an eighth-
Horn will participate in a ceremony at the State Capitol in Lincoln on Friday, May 1. The ceremony honors several students from across Nebraska who submitted writing projects.
Nebraska Poets Twyla Hansen and Matt Mason will also share from their poetries and each student poet will then read one of his/her poem to an audience that will gather at the capitol.
Horn's Language Arts Instructor at the Alliance St. Agnes Academy, Laurie Gould, submitted her poem for state competition. The poem, titled "My Nebraska," is Kacey's view of the Cornhusker State. She stated she collected her thoughts about Nebraska during her numerous trips across Nebraska on State Highway Two from Alliance to Lincoln.

GREAT JOB KACEY WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU!
